SEASIDE – Thirteen has proved to be an unlucky number for the Chico State women's soccer team. The Wildcats entered opening weekend of their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule unbeatehn and ranked No. 13 in the nation. But they finished winless over the weekend after Sunday's 1-0 loss at Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Wildcats, victims of Otters goalkeeper Alyssa Noh's program-record 13 saves, lost the game despite out-shooting Cal State Monterey Bay 27-5.
Cal State Monterey Bay improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 win the CCAA with the victory. Chico State fell to 4-2-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the CCAA.
The Otters' game-winning goal came on a counterattack following a Chico State turnover. Cal State Monterey Bay's Taylor Greenwood beat a Wildcats defender to a long ball to create a 1v1 with goalkeeper Caitlyn Duval. Duval came way off her line to challenge, but a composed finish from the Otter sophomore tucked the ball neatly inside the right post from the top of the box.
The Wildcats almost broke the seal three minutes earlier when Lindsey Dias' header hit the post. Carlie Reader had three shots saved, and Shelby Lanksbury, Brielyn Tovani, and Dias two apiece.
The Wildcats will try to get back to their winning ways next weekend on the road. They'll be at Cal State San Marcos Friday at 12:30 p.m. and UC San Diego Sunday at 2 p.m.
