SAN MARCOS – The Chico State women's soccer team continued to cook up scoring opportunities Friday afternoon at Cal State San Marcos. But for the second straight match the Wildcats failed to put the proverbial biscuit in the basket and had to swallow a disappointing 1-0 defeat.
Chico State, which has now lost three straight to start the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule, outshot the host Cougars 12-8 and had a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. But a Kayla Anderson penalty kick in the 49
th minute proved to be the difference.
Six different Wildcats unleashed shots on goal, but Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper Eric Dory saved each one. And in the 80
th minute, Brielynn Tovani's try ricocheted off the crossbar.
Chico State, ranked No. 13 in the nation just 10 days ago, fell to 4-3-1 overall. Cal State San Marcos improved to 3-1-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCAA.
During this three-match losing streak, the Wildcats have outshot their opponents by a combined 50-25 and had a 24-13 edge in shots on goal. But they've scored just once.
The Wildcats will try to turn things around Sunday when the play at UC San Diego. The Tritons are ranked No. 2 in the West and No. 11 in the nation. The match is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.
