Wildcats’ unbeaten streak goes by wayside

Can’t hold lead after taking early lead on Bozart’s strike

SAN FRANCISCO – The 13th-ranked Chico State women's soccer team kept right on rolling early on in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener at San Francisco State Friday afternoon. The Wildcats opened the scoring on Korie Bozart's blast from 30 yards in the 11th minute.

But two quick strikes by the Gators turned the tide and ended the Wildcats' unbeaten streak to start the season with a 2-1 defeat.

The Wildcats fell to 4-1-1 and 0-1-0 in the CCAA with the loss, while San Francisco State improved to 4-1-1 and 2-0-0 in the CCAA.

Bozart put the Wildcats on top with her third goal of the season – a precise and powerful effort. Pooja Patel, who earned the assist, had three defenders converge on her at the top of the box, and more on the way. She passed the ball back out to Bozart, who took a touch with her right foot and hammered a shot with her left that sailed high into the upper-V just inside the far post.

Both of the Gators' goals – just the second and third scored against the Wildcats and goalkeeper Caitlyn Duval this season – were equally impressive.

They knotted the score in the 22nd minute. After winning the battle for a goal kick near midfield and knocking it in the direction of Chico State's goal, the bouncing ball found its way to Jada Williams, who volleyed a gorgeous pass to Kimber Lohman, who was streaking down the left side of the field on a run toward the box. The ball bounced twice in the box, and as a defender and Duval converged, Lohman deftly used the outside of her boot to re-direct the ball into the empty net.

Lohman's shot and goal ended two impressive defensive streaks for the Wildcats: It was the first shot the Wildcats had allowed in 209 minutes and 56 seconds, and the first goal they had allowed in 377 minutes and 33 seconds.

The Gators took the lead for good in the 68th minute, using a quintet of quick passes to quickly move the ball down the field on a counterattack. That set up Sierra Sagasta's shot that snuck just inside the right post.

The Wildcats will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday morning at 11:30 in Seaside.
