TURLOCK – Stanislaus State starter Jordan Kron was not going to let the Chico State baseball team clinch a postseason spot in his watch.
Kron went the distance to lead the Warriors to a 9-3 win in the first of four games this weekend at Warrior Field.
Chico State entered the weekend needing one win or one Sonoma State loss to clinch a berth in next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, but neither came Friday. The Seawolves beat San Francisco State to open their four-game set.
The Wildcats led 2-1 in the fifth, got their first two runners on, and were threatening to blow the game open. Then the entire tenor of the game changed.
Kron got the Warriors out of the inning unscathed, getting a pop-up off the bat of Cody Snider, striking out Josh Falco and getting Andru Cardenas on a grounder to end the threat.
A two-out error opened the door for Stanislaus State in the bottom-half of the frame and they took advantage with a game-tying single.
And in the sixth, the Warriors were the one's breaking it open. A double, two singles and an error preceded a two-run homer, and suddenly, Stanislaus State had a 6-2 lead.
The Wildcats got a run back in the seventh on Dillon Kelley's fifth home run of the season, but could get no closer.
Ben Gamba's RBI-single in the first gives him 56 on the season, which is tied with Kevin Seaver (2010) and Orin Hirschkorn (1997) for the 10
th most in Chico State single-season history.
Casey Bennett added an RBI-single in the fourth.
Gamba, Kelley and Cameron Santos had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
Chico State fell to 30-17 overall and 20-15 in the CCAA, while Stanislaus State improved to 23-22 overall and 14-19 in conference play.
