A brooke – just what this brooke is seems to be a bit of a mystery – is not the only thing hidden at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo. There's treasure up in them there hills. Five treasures, to be exact. And X marks the top five spots at the NCAA Championship West/South Central Men's Golf Regional Championship, May 4-6.
The top five teams after 54 holes (18 each day), and top two individuals who are not part of an advancing team, will hit the jackpot: a berth in the NCAA Championship finals at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C., May 18-22.
Chico State, ranked No. 6 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region, has finished among the top five in each of its 11 events this season and 19 straight dating back to last. Twenty in a row would result in the Wildcats' second straight trip to the NCAA Championship Finals and seventh in the past 13 seasons. It would also mark Chico State's 12
th top-5 finish at the NCAA Regional Championships in the past 17 seasons.
Three Wildcats – Lee Gearhart, Alistair Docherty and Justin Wiles – were part of last season's team that tied for second at the West/South Central Super Regional and went on to the National Championship medal match play semifinals. New to the five-man roster this season are senior Zachary Sardina and freshman Colby Dean.
That's the same five that represented the Wildcats in a fifth-place finish at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout Regional Championship Preview at Hiddenbrooke March 30-31. Docherty finished eighth in the event, while Wiles and Gearhart both tied for 19
th.
The Wildcats are shooting for their first win at the regional championships since 2004. J.J. Jakovac finished second among individuals that year. He and Kyle Souza (2
nd in 2012) boast the top finish by a Chico State individual at the regional championships.
The Wildcats will be paired with West No. 1 Cal State Monterey Bay and South-Central No. 1 Cameron Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday the team's will be re-seeded. Fans can follow live scoring
