SAN FRANCISCO – It's been "one of those seasons" for the Chico State baseball team. Friday night's 4-3 loss at San Francisco State was "one of those games." And the seventh inning was "one of those innings."
So was the eighth.
Chico State loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh, trailing 4-2, but the Wildcats could only coax one run on an Andrew Carrillo sacrifice fly. Down 4-3 in the eighth, San Francisco State opened the door with a walk and an error, putting runners on first and second with one down. But a strikeout followed, and then Gators' center fielder Nick Jackson made
THIS ridiculous diving catch of Jeff Ortega's rocket to center to end Chico State's final scoring threat.
Both teams are now 15-21 on the season. Chico State, which has now dropped seven of its last nine games, fell to 14-19 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State improved to 14-15 in the CCAA.
Ace Luke Barker absorbed the loss for Chico State, falling to 4-2. But he and AJ Epstein kept the Wildcats in the game.
They just couldn't quite fight all the way back after falling behind 3-0 in the first.
Gordon Deacon gave the Wildcats a spark with a two-out double in the third. He scored on Connor Huesers' RBI-single. The team's hottest hitter, Huesers now has a hit in 11 of the Wildcats' last 12 games, a stretch during which he's hitting .395.
After San Francisco State got the run back in the bottom-half of the inning, Chico State scratched across another run in the fourth to make it 4-2. Danny Miller led off the inning with a single and then scored on Clayton Gelfand's base hit.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the seventh when Sean Smith drew a leadoff walk, Cody Bistline laid down a bunt single and Cody Slader was hit by a pitch.
The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at noon and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
