SAN FRANCISCO – When the lights go down in the city, the glow hanging around the Chico State baseball team will be much more pronounced.
Clayton Gelfand, Ryan O'Shea and Robert Hook combined to limit San Francisco State to just three runs on 12 hits in 18 innings as the Wildcats won two exciting games for their first doubleheader sweep since February. They won Saturday's opener 2-1 behind Gelfand's complete-game six-hitter. They came from behind to win a wild one in nine innings in the nightcap, 3-2.
Cody Bistline had three hits, three RBI and caught two gems Saturday.Gelfand's first collegiate complete game was nearly a shutout. That bid ended when the sophomore surrendered a two-out RBI single in the ninth. But he got a fly ball to center for the final out.
Gelfand (3-3) faced just six batters over the minimum, scattering six hits and striking out three. He did not walk or hit a batter and gave up just one extra-base hit.
Catcher Cody Bistline not only called a great game, but also drove in both runs for Chico State. His two-out RBI-single in the second gave the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage. His two-out RBI-single in the seventh made it 2-0.
Bistline finished 3-for-4. Andrew Carrillo and Dylan Garcia added two hits apiece.
O'Shea made his first start of the season in the nightcap, and despite surrendering his first two runs of the season (only one was earned), he pitched into the seventh. The senior surrendered just four hits and struck out six.
Hook had his back after a leadoff walk in the seventh, eventually getting out of a bases-loaded jam. He wound up pitching three scoreless innings for the win, improving to 2-1.
The Wildcats trailed 2-0 after five before scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh to send the game into extra innings. They plated the winning run in the ninth on the day's wildest play.
Gordon Deacon led off with a single to get the winning rally started. He moved to second on Bistline's sacrifice bunt before Garcia was intentionally walked.
James Hatano, whose name might mean "Hard To Tag," was up next. Hatano looped a single to left. Deacon, unsure if it would fall in, got a late jump off second. He was waved home anyway and thrown out by plenty. Meanwhile, Hatano turned and headed for second on the throw but got caught in a rundown between first and second. He somehow managed to evade the tag, however, and because Garcia was sprinting for home on a heads up play, he scored the go-ahead run.
Gelfand and Deacon delivered two hits apiece for the Wildcats. Garcia was walked four times and scored twice.

Chico State, which was just 2-12 in its last seven doubleheaders, improved to 17-21 overall and 16-19 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats managed to stay alive in the playoff race for at least one more day in the process.
They jumped from eighth to sixth in the conference standings, leapfrogging San Francisco State in the process, and trail fourth-place Cal State L.A. by 3.5 games. The Wildcats will play their final road game Sunday at 11 a.m. in San Francisco before returning home for their final regular-season series, against Cal State East Bay, April 24-26.
They have a bye during the last weekend of conference play, and with a strong finish and some help, could be sitting at home hoping for something crazy to happen to get them into the postseason.
San Francisco State slipped to 15-23 overall and 14-17 in the CCAA.
Sunday's series finale will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY beginning at 11 a.m.
