TURLOCK – Danny Miller and Clayton Gelfand got two hits apiece and Gordon Deacon drove a pinch-hit RBI single to left in the eighth, but it was an otherwise woeful day for the Chico State baseball team in Turlock on Tuesday.
Suddenly hot Cal State Stanislaus beat the Wildcats 10-2 in a makeup of a rainout at Warrior Baseball Field. The Warriors have now won eight of nine, improving to 18-20 overall and 13-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in a desperate bid to challenge for a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament. Chico State unable to put together a similar streak at any time this season, fell to 15-20 overall and 14-18 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats will play a four-game series at San Francisco State this weekend, beginning with a single game Friday at 3 p.m., before returning home to wrap up the 2015 campaign against Cal State East Bay in their final series of the season April 24-26.
The Warriors scored four times in the first inning against Robert Hook, who was making his first start of the season. They added three in the third to knock him from the game.
The Wildcats got on the board in the fifth. James Hatano led off with a walk, moved to second on Gelfand's single, and scored on Miller's base hit up the middle to make it 7-1.
Cal State Stanislaus answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own, however.
Head Coach Dave Taylor called upon his reserves late in the game, and they answered the bell in the eighth. Nick Padilla drew a leadoff walk, moved to second when Cody Bistline was hit by a pitch for the second time Tuesday, and scored when Deacon drove a single to left.
