With the wind blowing out to left, Saturday looked like a good day to hit at Nettleton Stadium. But the Chico State baseball team could not take advantage and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay.
Chico State dropped the opener 10-0 and the nightcap 3-1, mustering just 11 hits (all singles). The Wildcats fell to 11-14 overall and 10-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Brad Lohse pitched well enough to win in the opener, but a pair of wind-aided two-run homers in the seventh blew the game open for the Otters, who improved to 20-11 overall and 16-7 in the CCAA with the sweep.
Lohse struck out a career-high nine batters and retired 11 straight batters from the third through the sixth.
Despite three hits in the third and three more in the sixth, the Wildcats offense failed to provide any run support.
James Hatano, Dylan Garcia and Tyler Madrid had two hits apiece for Chico State.
True freshman Hunter Haworth had the Wildcats in position to win with four scoreless innings.
Chico State took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Andrew Carrillo led off with a walk, advanced to second on James Hatano's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Dylan Garcia's single. They had runners on second and third with one down, but Madrid struck out and Clayton Gelfand grounded out to end the Wildcats' last big scoring threat.
Haworth struck out five and allowed just two hits in the first four innings. But an error opened the gates for a three-run fifth inning that gave Cal State Monterey Bay the lead for keeps.
Garcia extended his hitting streak to seven games. He's batting .480 during that stretch and .429 in his last 14 games.
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
