’Cats respond swiftly, win 6-4

Gelfand good on the mound and at the plate

Chico State Head Baseball Coach Dave Taylor held nothing back in talking to the local newspaper after Saturday's doubleheader sweep, questioning his team's toughness and talent. The Wildcats certainly seemed motivated. They responded swiftly on Sunday, scoring four times in the first inning on the way to a 6-4 win against Cal State Monterey Bay at Nettleton Stadium.

Dylan Garcia set the tone with a line single that glanced off the charging left-fielder's glove as he attempted a shoestring catch leading off the first and the Wildcats were off! After Andrew Carrillo's first of three school-record tying sacrifice bunts, Connor Hueser's hit a hard smash just inside the bag to plate the Wildcats' first run.

Connor Huesers had two hits, including an RBI-double
to start the Wildcats' scoring in the first.
Clayton Gelfand and James Hatano also drove in runs in the inning and Danny Miller scored on a throwing error to make it 4-1.

Chico State (12-14 overall and 11-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh on Tyler Madrid's two-run single.

Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 20-12 overall and 16-8 in the CCAA.

Gelfand (2-2) got the win on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in seven and two-thirds innings. It was the longest outing of the sophomore's career. He retired eight straight and 14 of 15 after surrendering single runs in the first and third.

Robert Hook got the final out of the eighth and then Ryan O'Shea pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save. The senior has now thrown six no-hit innings while striking out nine.

The red-hot Garcia, who stretched his hitting streak to eight games, finished three hits.  Gelfand and Huesers had two apiece for Chico State, which next travels to Cal State L.A. for a crucial four-game series beginning Thursday night at 6.
