Ready or not, here comes California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball action.
Thanks to the cancelation of its season-opening series the Chico State baseball team got in just three non-conference games in advance of its first CCAA series this weekend at Cal State Stanislaus. The Wildcats hope to hit the ground running in Friday's 6 p.m. series opener. The teams will tangle twice Saturday beginning at noon, and then wrap up the series Sunday at noon.
All four games will be broadcast online at ChicoWildcats.com. Saturday's first game and Sunday's tilt will be carried live locally on AM-1290 KPAY. Saturday's second game might, depending on what time the first one ends. Links to the video stream, live stats and audio broadcast for all four games will all be available on our homepage and the baseball schedule page.
Despite their truncated non-conference schedule the Wildcats already have plenty of tight-game experience, having played three straight extra-inning affairs to start the season last weekend at Fresno Pacific. They dropped the first two games before rallying to win the finale 6-5 in 10 innings.
They had the Sunbirds down to their last strike twice in Friday's opener before falling 2-1 in 10 innings, and then saw a 2-0 lead evaporate in a 3-2, 14-inning loss in Saturday's first game.
Still, there were plenty of positives for Head Coach Dave Taylor to take from the weekend, particularly in the team's performance on the pitching mound. Starters Luke Barker and Brad Lohse each worked seven frames without allowing an earned run. And relievers Derek Sesma, Clayton Gelfand, Kurt Laver and Andy Burschinger blazed through two or more scoreless innings.
Chico State pitchers posted zeroes in 29 of 34 innings over the weekend.
The Wildcats have won the last six series' played between these teams. They've won eight straight against the Warriors and 20 of 24 since that start of 2009. They've won six straight in Turlock.
