Rain, Seniors and a Tough Finish: Wildcats Fall in Home Finale

CHICO, Calif. - Cal State Monterey Bay spoiled Chico State's home finale of the 2026 season, defeating the Wildcats 13-3 on a chilly, rain-soaked afternoon at Nettleton Stadium to split the four-game CCAA series Sunday.

Rain throughout the night and into the morning delayed the start, setting the tone for a damp Senior Day. Prior to first pitch, Chico State honored its seven seniors—Rocco Borrelli, Carson Case, Keoni Coloma, Stefan Foley, Jesse Gadd, Aaron McCurley and Juan Nunez—for their contributions to the program.

With the defeat, Chico State falls to 23-23 overall and 12-16 in the CCAA, while No. 10 Cal State Monterey Bay improves to 34-12 overall and 19-9 in conference play.

With four games remaining, Chico State still has a path to the CCAA Tournament, but the margin for error is gone. The Wildcats enter the final weekend tied for sixth place with Cal State East Bay at 12-16, two games behind fourth-place Cal State San Bernardino and needing to climb into the top five. Chico State will likely need to win its series at Cal State East Bay—potentially a sweep—to have a realistic chance, while also needing help in the form of losses by teams ahead of them, particularly Cal State San Bernardino, which closes its season on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills. With Cal State LA already finished at 16-16, the Wildcats' clearest path is to pass San Bernardino or create a tie scenario, making every game in Hayward critical to their postseason hopes.

The Otters broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on seven hits to take control. Cal State Monterey Bay strung together four consecutive RBI hits with two outs, capitalizing on defensive miscues and extending innings to build a 6-0 advantage.

Chico State answered in the bottom half with a highlight moment from one of its seniors. Stefan Foley led off the inning by driving a ball to deep right center that struck the top of the outfield wall and caromed away for a triple. Myles Walton followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Foley home and put the Wildcats on the board.

That would be as close as Chico State would get. The Otters added another decisive surge in the eighth inning, plating seven runs to put the game out of reach. Cal State Monterey Bay finished with 16 hits on the afternoon, including multi-hit performances from several spots in the lineup.

The Wildcats showed some late life in the eighth, scoring twice on RBI groundout from Carson Case and a run-scoring single by Juan Nunez, but could not generate further momentum.

Foley, Coloma, and Snitko each recorded extra-base hits for Chico State, which totaled 10 hits in the contest.
