The wide world of winning

Patel, Dias deliver a goal and assist apiece

If Willie the Wildcat had a dollar for every time Chico State Women's Soccer Coach Kim Sutton screamed "Get it wide!" he could start a Wildcats mascot scholarship fund.

It was clear that Sutton's pleas are sinking in during the Wildcats' 2-0 win against Cal State East Bay Friday at University Soccer Stadium. They dominated the majority of the match by getting the ball down the flanks to the end line. By doing so, the Wildcats creating numerous scoring opportunities on crosses and corner kicks.

Lindsey Dias cashed in with the first goal, crashing the near post to volley home Pooja Patel's cross from the end line just 11:30 into the match.

Patel got the ball back to the end line to set up the Wildcats' second goal in the 23rd minute. This time she drew a corner kick. Brooke Coelho, taking the corner, connected with Dias near the PK spot for a flick-on to the back post where the Wildcats were crashing hard. Erin Woods knocked the ball down and Patel pounced on it and pounded it home for a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats improved to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while stretching their home-unbeaten streak to 11. They're 9-0-2 at home since Oct. 3 of last season, including 4-0-1 in 2015.

Cal State East Bay fell to 4-8-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the CCAA.

Dias and Patel each provided a goal and assist. Woods' helper was the second of the freshman's collegiate career.

Chico State's back line of Cassi Scroggins, Coelho, Jojo Smyth, Woods, and Devon Morones (who played the second half in place of Woods) was outstanding, limiting Cal State East Bay to just seven shots.

Wildcats goalkeeper Mackenzie Boulton made a pair of saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season and the team's fifth shutout.

Chico State will attempt to keep that home streak alive on Sunday when Cal State East Bay comes to town for an 11:30 a.m. showdown.
