Box Score Not again. The chilling thought had to be running through the minds of Chico State's men's basketball players as Cal State Monterey rallied late. Then the thought became resolute. NOT AGAIN! The Wildcats made sure of that, beating the Otters 87-80 Friday night at the Kelp Bed to give Head Coach Greg Clink his 100th career victory.
Now 18-5 overall and 14-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Wildcats also clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fifth straight season.
Cal State Monterey Bay shocked Chico State five weeks ago, outscoring the Wildcats 15-2 in the final 4:36, capped by Alex Fertig's game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer at Acker Gym.
Friday the Wildcats led by 10 with 4:10 to play but saw their advantage dwindled to three with 2:18 left. So they played a little keep-away. Jordan Semple and Giordano Estrada grabbed offensive rebounds to give the Wildcats three chances to score as the seconds ticked away. Parker then dished to Jordan Barton for an inside bucket that gave the Wildcats a five-point lead with 1:15 to go.
Then Rashad Parker pumped in a crushing 3-pointer with 27 seconds left to give the Wildcats a six-point lead and a comfortable cushion from that point forward.
Parker led five Wildcats in double-figures with 25 points. Giordano Estrada scored nine of his 13 in the final 10:25, Sean Park finished with 12, and Amir Carraway and Barton scored 11 apiece.
Chico State wraps up the regular season portion of its road schedule Saturday night at Cal State East Bay. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.
