Four! (In a good way); Wildcats card day’s fourth-best round again and sit in fourth halfway through National Championships

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – With the fourth best round of the day for the second day in a row, the Chico State men’s golf team remains in fourth place at the halfway point of the NCAA Championships at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. The Wildcats, who teed off at 4:30 a.m., PDT, carded a team total of 10-over par 298, which was four strokes better than any of the other seven teams that went off in the morning. However, three teams took advantage of more favorable conditions in the afternoon to better the Wildcats on Wednesday.

At 29-over par for the tournament, fourth-ranked Chico State trails tournament leader Florida Southern, the nation’s second-ranked team, by 10 strokes. But just one stroke separates the Wildcats from Sonoma State and Nova Southeastern, which are tied for second place. Western New Mexico is three strokes behind Chico State in fifth while Cameron University and Queens University of Charlotte are nine stokes back of the Wildcats in a tie for sixth.

Chico State men's golfer Sylvester Gama.
The Wildcats also feature two players in the hunt for the individual crown. Kyle Souza’s carded the second lowest round of the tournament thus far, a 2-under par 70, to move into a tie for second place, just a stroke behind Ben Lasso of Queens. He bogeyed the 11th, his second hole of the day, but went 3-under after that. Souza compiled 14 pars and birdied the par-4 16th, par-5 18th, and par-5 seventh.

Sylvester Gama also had a strong round finishing with a 1-over par 73 and sits in a four-way tie for sixth at 4-over par, five strokes behind the leader. Eric Frazzetta rebounded from a frustrating first round with a solid 5-over par 77 on the tough layout that has yielded an average score of 7-over par 79. Brandon Harkins was primed for a major turnaround after his disappointing 84 on Wednesday, but was forced to settle for a 6-over 78 after finishing his round with a bogey and double-bogey. Lucas Delgado seemed to have righted the ship after five bogeys in the first eight holes, but he finished 8-over after a triple on the par-4 fifth.

Delgado is currently tied for 36th in the 108-player field, Frazzetta is tied for 76th, and Harkins is tied for 82nd.

The Wildcats will tee off beginning at 9 a.m., PDT, on Thursday. Harkins tees off at 9, Frazzetta at 9:10, Delgado at 9:20, Gama at 9:30, and Souza at 9:40. The Championship concludes Friday.
