Kevin Warren’s junior basketball season ended abruptly when the NCAA announced the cancelation of all winter and spring championships. Warren and his Chico State teammates were in La Jolla preparing for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, scheduled to begin the following day. Instead, they got on a bus and came home. Warren, like everyone else, was bummed. But that disappointment won’t slow the personal drive of our Wildcat of the Week.
A two-time Academic All-America nominee, Warren has proven to be one of the athletic department’s top performers in the classroom and on the floor since transferring from Cal State Monterey Bay following his freshman year. Prior to the start of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, Warren was recognized for his work in the classroom with the CCAA Championship Scholar Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the tournament finals site.
A native of Oakland, Warren helped lead the Wildcats to a 22-6 regular-season record, matching the program’s highest regular-season win total since 1984. He led the Wildcats with 47 steals and 109 made free throws and ranked second on the team in scoring and assists.
Warren is a senior academically and is set to graduate in May with his degree in Communication Studies.
His favorite piece of advice is: “Never lose sight of who you are,” a great reminder during this time, and a good clue that Warren will be front and center in the virtual classroom over the next few weeks.
Warren plans to pursue a career as a sports broadcaster while serving as a youth basketball coach.
