The Chico State volleyball team expected Kim Wright to be a huge contributor in 2018, but even the biggest Wildcats fan couldn’t have predicted how effectively she’s filled up the stat sheet during the first eight matches of the season. After posting an impressive opening weekend at the NorCal Volleyball Classic in Turlock, the junior middle hitter was a standout again last weekend in Fresno, piling up the points to help lead the ’Cats to three wins at the D2 West Region Volleyball Classic in Fresno. Wright’s outstanding productivity has earned the San Diego native Wildcat of the Week honors.

Wright racked up 46 kills (averaging 3.29 a set) while posting a .414 hitting percentage over Chico State’s four weekend matches. She also collected nine service aces and 10 blocks as the Wildcats improved their season record to 7-1.

Friday, Wright notched a team-high 13 kills and four blocks in a three-set win over Seattle Pacific, then tied her career high with 20 kills later in the day as Chico State came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Simon Fraser. Wright delivered 13 kills over the Wildcats’ two Saturday matches, and in a sweep of Fresno Pacific, she posted eight aces, becoming only the third player in Chico State volleyball history to connect for at least eight aces in a single match. Wright was rewarded for her productive weekend by being the lone Wildcat named to the D2 West Region Showcase All-Tournament team.

Wright and Chico State volleyball team opens California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this weekend, hosting Cal Poly Pomona Friday and No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino Saturday at Acker Gym.
