Head Coach Greg Clink asked for more effort out of his charges last week following a rare three-game losing skid. Corey Silverstrom responded. The senior averaged 20.5 points per game and provided lock-down defense to lead the Wildcats to victories against Cal State San Bernardino Thursday and first-place Cal Poly Pomona Saturday, and earned Wildcat of the Week honors in the process.
Silverstrom scored 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting and chipped in five rebounds and three assists in the Wildcats' 65–57 victory over Cal State San Bernardino Thursday. Saturday, Silverstrom scored 18 points and dished out four assists as Chico State knocked off first-place and 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona 76–65.
The guard from Fresno (Bullard High School) also contributed stellar defense as the Wildcats held both opponents well below their season scoring averages. His defensive effort was especially notable Saturday. Silverstrom was matched up with Cal Poly Pomona leading scorer Jordan Ogundiran for much of the night, and held the lightening-quick point guard to 5-of-14 shooting and helped to force four turnovers.
Silverstrom currently leads the Wildcats in scoring (15.2 points per game) and assists (3.6). He ranks fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association in free throw percentage (.833), seventh in assists, and eighth in scoring.
He has moved up to 13th on Chico State's career scoring list and is just 47 points behind Damario Sims in 10th. Silverstrom also ranks fifth all-time in made 3-pointers (168), 13th in assists (216), and is 10 steals shy of becoming the 11th Wildcat with 100.
