The Chico State women's basketball team went into its two weekend home games knowing two of the Wildcats' top three scorers would not be playing and would need someone to step up to provide some extra offense. Kayla Taylor did just that, sliding into the starting lineup to score a combined 22 points—including a career-high 14 against Cal State LA—in victories over the Golden Eagles and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Taylor's impressive scoring efforts make the Concord product the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Taylor connected on 46 percent of her field goal attempts (11-for-24) while adding three rebounds, three assists and two steals to help Chico State improve to 10-5 on the season and move into seventh place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
Friday against Cal State LA, Taylor posted her best-ever offensive performance as a Wildcat, hitting 7-for-11 shots to finish with 14 points in Chico State's 66-62 win over the Golden Eagles. Saturday, Taylor contributed eight points to a balanced 'Cats' attack in a 71-60 triumph over Dominguez Hills.
Taylor raised her season scoring average to 5.7 points per game over the weekend, and on the year is shooting an impressive 49.3 percent from the field. In three starts, Taylor has nearly doubled her scoring output, averaging 10 points a contest.
Taylor and the Wildcats hit the road this week, taking on Humboldt State Thursday in Arcata before traveling to Southern California Saturday to battle Cal Poly Pomona.
