Sophomore Abbey McGrew has been one of the Chico State women's golf team's most consistent performers since joining the program in 2013. As a true freshman, she placed in the top 30 in five different tournaments, and a little more than halfway through the 2014-15 campaign, McGrew has notched four more top 30 finishes. The Yolo native posted a two-round score of 155 at the St. Edward's Invitational to not only earn her first top 10 finish of the season but also Wildcat of the Week honors.
Playing through cold, wet and windy conditions in Austin, Texas, McGrew relied heavily on her consistency throughout the 36-hole event at Onion Creek Country Club. McGrew carded a 7-over par 77 in Sunday's opening round, then after rainy weather kept the golfers off the course Monday, she came back with a 8-over 78 on Tuesday to earn a tie for ninth place on the individual leaderboard and lead Chico State to a fifth place tournament finish.
McGrew has posted sub-80 scores in 10 of her 11 rounds this season, and is second on the Wildcats with a 77.36 strokes per round average. In 31 career rounds, she is averaging 79.9 strokes, which has led to a pair of top 10 tournament finishes and six trips into the top 20.
McGrew and the Wildcats are back in action March 2-3 in Vallejo competing in the Cal State East Bay-Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout.
