The numbers speak for themselves: just eight matches into her sophomore season, Chico State volleyball setter Torey Thompson ranks ninth in Wildcats history for career assists. The Newport Beach native added to her gaudy stat totals last week, helping lead the 'Cats to three straight home wins and into a tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. Her considerable contributions to Chico State's potent offense makes Thompson the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Thompson filled up the stat sheet to the tune of 129 assists in the three Wildcat victories, averaging a glittering 14.33 assists per set. She also added 25 digs, four kills, four service aces and a block assist as Chico State improved to 5-3 on the year and 3-1 in CCAA play.
Â
Thompson began the week with 28 assists over two sets in Tuesday's sweep of Simpson University. Friday she racked up 43 assists, two kills, a pair of aces and eight digs as the Wildcats took three straight from Cal State East Bay, followed by a 58-assist, 13-dig performance Saturday in the 'Cats' four-set victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Â
Thompson has only improved her stats following 2013's All-American freshman season. She currently leads the CCAA and ranks in the top 20 nationally in assists per set (11.93), and is second among conference setters in assists (322). Thompson has already amassed over 1,500 assists in her brief Chico State career.
Â
Thompson and the Wildcats hit the road this week for a pair of important conference matches, facing Cal State San Bernardino Thursday before heading to Arcata for a Saturday showdown against Humboldt State.
