Chico State Athletics

The Chico State softball team didn’t fare quite as well as they had hoped in its conference-opening series against UC San Diego, losing three out of four to the No. 21 Tritons. But one aspect of the weekend that was very encouraging to Wildcat fans was the play of Amanda Cordeiro. The sophomore outfielder figured prominently in the team’s offensive attack throughout the four-game set. Cordiero’s impressive performance makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.
 
Cordeiro batted .400 with a pair of RBI in the UC San Diego series, with two of her four hits going for extra bases. She reached base six times in her 12 plate appearances and posted a team-high .600 slugging percentage.
 
The Huntington Beach native singled in Friday’s 2-1 victory over UC San Diego, but saved her biggest offensive contributions for Saturday. In game one of the doubleheader, Cordeiro reached base twice via a single and walk, then in the nightcap went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles – her first two-bagger knocking in the Wildcats’ final two runs in a 10-4 loss to the Tritons.
 
Cordeiro is hitting .444 on the year and is tied for fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) batting race. She leads all conference players with a .583 on-base percentage.
 
Cordeiro and the Wildcats play their first home games of the season this weekend when they host Cal State Stanislaus in Friday and Saturday doubleheaders at noon at University Softball Field.
