After being in the starting lineup for the first seven games of the season, Hannah Womack is now one of the first players to come off the bench for the Chico State women’s basketball team. Head Coach Brian Fogel is quick to point out the change is not a demotion, but a much-needed way to generate more offense from his reserves. The transition has already yielded impressive results – and Womack’s solid work off the bench during the team’s Southern California road swing has earned the junior guard Wildcat of the Week honors.
Womack led all Chico State scorers with a combined 23 points to help the Wildcats earn a split of their weekend road trip. Womack connected on three 3-pointers while also contributing four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. She was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line over the two games.
Friday against Cal State San Bernardino, Womack scored a team-high 14 points and buried two big 3-pointers in the Wildcats’ 67-64 win over the Coyotes. Saturday against UC San Diego, Womack came off the bench to net nine points, grab three rebounds, hand out two assists and pull off two steals, but it wasn’t enough to keep the ’Cats from dropping a 76-65 decision to the host Tritons.
Womack is averaging 12.2 points a game and has hit 16 3-pointers so far during the 2013-14 season. She has connected on 91.7 percent of her free throws, which ranks second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and among the top 25 nationally.
The Wildcats return to Acker Gym this weekend to begin a stretch of eight home games in their next 10 outings. Chico State hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
