More often than not, the players that put up huge numbers get the headlines. But if you ask the players themselves, it’s the individual that fills up the stat sheet with steady, “under the radar” numbers in several categories – contributing to the team putting up big numbers in the win column – who receives the majority of the praise. Monnie Davidson-Mays was just such a performer as the Chico State women’s basketball team extended their latest winning streak to five with road victories over San Francisco State and Sonoma State, and for her efforts nabs Wildcat of the Week honors.
Davidson-Mays averaged nine points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, two steals and one block in the two weekend contests. Her multi-faceted impact on the games helped the No. 11 ’Cats run their season record to 18-2 while maintaining sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
In Friday’s 54-53 win Friday over San Francisco State, Davidson-Mays contributed seven points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal as the Wildcats swept the regular-season series with the Gators. Saturday against Sonoma State, Davidson-Mays poured in 11 points (knocking down her first 3-pointer of the season) while snaring seven boards, dishing out three assists and grabbing three steals in the Wildcats’ 66-48 victory over the Seawolves.
Davidson-Mays currently ranks third on the Wildcats in scoring (9.8 points a game), tied for second in rebounding (5.9 a contest) and is second on the team in steals (43) and blocked shots (nine).
Chico State returns to Acker Gym this weekend to host Cal State San Bernardino Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday.
