The Chico State women’s basketball team racked up a pair of inspired wins over two of the best teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference during last weekend’s Carl’s Jr. Coslet Classic-CCAA/GNAC Challenge, with several Wildcat players turning in season-best performances. The contributions Monnie Davidson-Mays made to the ’Cats’ victories over Western Washington and Seattle Pacific were simply in keeping with what she’s delivered since the season’s opening tap – clutch defense, creating numerous fast break opportunities, and timely scoring when the team is most in need of a bucket. Her solid play Friday and Saturday has earned Davidson-Mays Wildcat of the Week honors.

For the tournament, Davidson-Mays averaged 9.5 points a game, while collecting five rebounds, two blocks and two assists as Chico State ran its season record to 6-0. Her most important stat, though, was her seven steals – the biggest of which led directly to a Davidson-Mays breakaway layup with 46 seconds remaining (pictured above) to put the Wildcats ahead to stay in Friday’s 75-74 upset over No. 6 Western Washington.

Davidson-Mays came up big again Saturday against a talented Seattle Pacific squad. Monnie matched her career-high with 11 points, grabbed three steals and blocked two shots as the ’Cats downed the Falcons 89-77 to complete the team’s Coslet Classic sweep.

Davidson-Mays is currently fourth among Chico State players in scoring, averaging 8.2 points a game, and leads the Wildcats with 17 steals (sixth most in the CCAA). She is also tied for third in rebounding (5.0 a contest).

Chico State plays its final two games in December this week, going on the road to take on Notre Dame de Namur Wednesday before returning to Acker Gym Saturday to host Cal State Stanislaus.
