Prior to last weekend’s huge California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series against Sonoma State, Chico State junior relief pitcher Morgan Yee had made just five appearances on the season. But with everything on the line in a tightly-contested conference race, Wildcat Head Coach Dave Taylor went to the lanky righthander to deliver some key innings – and the Santa Clara native delivered, tossing seven shutout innings and notching a pair of wins as the ’Cats took three of four from the Seawolves. Yee’s mound dominance makes him an easy choice for Wildcat of the Week.
Yee, a transfer from Mission Community College, threw five scoreless innings in Friday’s series opener, allowing just three hits and striking out eight Sonoma County batters. He would pick up the victory as the Wildcats scored two unearned runs in the top of the 14th to down the Seawolves, 5-3. In Sunday’s series finale at Sacramento’s Raley Field, Yee kept Chico State in the ballgame by tossed two shutout innings, allowing two hits but inducing a pair of double-play balls. Yee earned the victory as the Wildcats came back from a 7-1 deficit with eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to shock Sonoma State, 9-7.
In just seven appearances on the season, Yee is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in 15 innings of work. He has allowed only five walks on the year.
Thanks in large part to Yee’s efforts against Sonoma State, Chico State enters this weekend’s home series with Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 29-13 season record, and tied with Cal State San Bernardino for second place in the CCAA standings with a 19-13 conference mark.
