Chico State junior first baseman Jon Peters’ tiebreaking two-out, two-run single in the 12th lifted the Wildcats to a 7-2 win in the first of two games. Then, his sacrifice bunt helped key a three-run inning in a 3-2 win in the nightcap of their doubleheader sweep in Turlock Thursday. For his efforts, Peters has been named Wildcat of the Week.
Peters entered the first game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the 11th and was part of a game-saving double play. The Warriors had the bases loaded with one out in a tie game, but Peters made a nice play to complete the twin killing and keep the Wildcats’ hopes alive.
He then came to bat with the bases loaded and two out in the 12th and proceeded to rip a two-run single up the middle to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Peters, whose heroics helped earn him a start in the nightcap, immediately made his presence felt in a completely different fashion. He came to the plate with runners on first and second and none out and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt – his first of the season. Both of those runners scored thanks to a sacrifice fly and a base hit, as the Wildcats put three runs on the board in the frame and held on for a 3-2 win.
