Johnny Hay has posted some hefty offensive stats this season, but over the weekend the junior from Canyon Country put up huge numbers in Chico State’s four game series sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay. Hay hit a blistering .667 (10-for-15), with five doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, seven RBI, 21 total bases, three walks and a stolen base to post a 1.400 slugging percentage and .722 on-base percentage. Those big numbers add up to Hay being named the Wildcat of the Week.

Friday, Hay went 4-for-5, blasting a pair of homers and a double while scoring four times and knocking in four runs in Chico State’s 18-2 win over the Otters. In Saturday’s doubleheader opener, Hay had a double among his three hits and drove in a pair in a 16-6 Wildcat victory; in the nightcap, he went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored as Chico State edged Monterey Bay 6-3. In Sunday’s series finale, Hay reached base in all three plate appearances, doubling twice while scoring once and picking up an RBI in the Wildcats’ 12-3 win.

Despite missing seven games this season, Hay leads the Wildcats with 11 home runs and 56 RBI, and his .368 batting average is second only to Michael Murphy’s .380 mark. Hay ranks sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in batting, fourth in RBI, and is tied for sixth in home runs among conference players.

Chico State, 34-16 on the year, moves on to postseason play Thursday when they travel to Stockton to take on UC San Diego in the first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament at Klein Family Field on the University of Pacific campus.
