Oliver Hanf

Longtime Chico State track & field coach Oliver Hanf completed his 14th season leading the men’s program in 2026 while continuing his second stint at the helm of the women’s program. Hanf, who returned to lead the Wildcat women on August 10, 2023, has spent 21 total seasons as Chico State’s women’s head coach and has been associated with Wildcat track & field—as a student-athlete and coach—for the better part of four decades.

Across more than 30 combined seasons leading Chico State’s track & field programs, Hanf has built one of the most accomplished coaching résumés in California Collegiate Athletic Association history. He has led the Wildcat men and women to 14 CCAA team championships, including eight on the men’s side and six on the women’s side, and has been named CCAA Coach of the Year 14 times. His teams have produced more than 100 All-America awards/performances, five NCAA national championships, and a long list of CCAA champions, USTFCCCA All-West Region selections, NCAA Championships qualifiers, school-record holders and national top-25 finishes.

As the Women's Track & Field Coach
Hanf first built one of the top women’s track & field programs in NCAA Division II, guiding Chico State for 16 seasons before moving full-time to the men’s head coaching position in June 2013. During that first stint, Hanf led the Wildcat women to five CCAA championships, including four straight from 2010–13, and helped establish Chico State as a consistent national presence. His women’s teams finished among the top 30 programs in the country 11 times between 2000 and 2013, including nine consecutive seasons from 2002 through 2010.

During those 16 seasons, Hanf mentored 39 All-Americans, including four national champions, and 61 CCAA champions. He earned five CCAA Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year awards, first in 2004 and then four straight from 2010 through 2013. Hanf also earned two USTFCCCA West Region Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year honors during his first tenure leading the program.

Hanf returned to lead the women’s program on August 10, 2023, and quickly helped the Wildcats return to championship form. Chico State finished second at the CCAA Championships in each of his first two seasons back, in 2024 and 2025, before breaking through in 2026 with the program’s first CCAA title since 2017. The Wildcats scored 213.5 points to edge Cal Poly Pomona and claim their 10th CCAA championship since 2002.

The 2026 championship season also earned Hanf CCAA Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year and USTFCCCA Women’s Track & Field West Region Coach of the Year honors. The Wildcats captured conference titles from Iresh Molina in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters and Paulina Martins in the 1,500 meters, while also collecting key podium finishes across the distance races, hurdles, jumps, pole vault, heptathlon and 4x400-meter relay.

Chico State carried that momentum to the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where the Wildcats produced six All-America awards. Iresh Molina earned First Team All-America honors in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, Della Molina was a First Team All-American in the 10,000 meters and a Second Team All-American in the 5,000 meters, while Martins and Megan Malloy earned Second Team All-America honors in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, respectively.

Hanf’s second stint has also featured several of the top marks in program history. Iresh Molina broke the Chico State 10,000-meter record in 2026, Janey Rubio set the program pole vault record, and Della Molina, Martins, Sienna Bianchi, Malloy, Teresa Vasconcellos, Emma Gaddy, Kylie Davis, Charlie Ham, Crystal Rosales and others climbed the Wildcats’ all-time top-10 lists.

As the Men's Track & Field Coach
Hanf took over the Chico State men’s program in January 2013 as interim head coach following the retirement of his longtime mentor, Kirk Freitas, and was named the permanent head coach that June after a national search. In his first season leading the men, Hanf guided the Wildcats to their 10th straight CCAA championship, a No. 23 national ranking, and another national title from J Patrick Smith, who captured his second consecutive NCAA decathlon crown and was named the USTFCCCA National Field Athlete of the Year.

The following season, Hanf led Chico State to one of the most memorable years in program history. The 2014 Wildcats won the CCAA championship for the 11th straight season, finished sixth in the nation, and produced seven All-America performances. Smith captured his third consecutive NCAA decathlon national championship, scoring a school-record 7,645 points, and Chico State received the Webb Cup as the top collegiate decathlon program in the nation. Hanf was named both CCAA and USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year.

Hanf continued to keep the Wildcats among the region’s and nation’s top programs throughout the decade. Chico State ranked No. 16 nationally in 2015, won CCAA championships in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, and earned multiple West Region No. 1 rankings. During that stretch, Hanf coached a long list of All-Americans, including Kyle Medina, Will Reyes, Tyler Arroyo, Eddie King, Jack Johnson, Lane Andrews, Derek Morton, Michael Good, Zak Stroing, Aaron Martin, Wade Tsang, Dotun Olubeko and others. The Wildcats also won the Webb Cup again in 2017.

Chico State’s 2019 team capped that run with a fourth straight CCAA title, the program’s 15th conference championship in 16 seasons, and the No. 1 ranking in the West Region. Tyler Arroyo and Eddie King earned All-America honors for the second consecutive year, and Hanf was named both CCAA and USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year.

The 2020 and 2021 seasons were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Hanf kept the program moving forward. In 2022, the Wildcats returned to competition with a second-place finish at the CCAA Championships, a No. 3 West Region ranking, and All-America performances from Cristian Brady in the pole vault and Rory Abberton in the 1,500 meters. Brady also set a new Chico State pole vault record.

After three straight runner-up finishes at the CCAA Championships from 2022 through 2024, Hanf guided the Wildcats back to the top of the conference in 2025. Chico State captured the CCAA title in dramatic fashion, edging Cal Poly Pomona by 1.5 points and clinching the championship in the final event with a 4x400-meter relay victory by Trey Suffredini, Quincy Patton, Brody Staley and Vincent Rinaldi. The Wildcats produced CCAA event champions in Jordan Ausbie, Chance Hefter, Damian Garcia, Staley, Brayden McLaughlin, Hunter Dougherty and the 4x400-meter relay, while Hanf was named CCAA Men’s Coach of the Year.

The Wildcats successfully defended their CCAA championship in 2026, scoring 263 points to outdistance runner-up Cal Poly Pomona. Chico State won seven conference event titles, led by Garcia in the 800 meters and 1,500 meters, Staley in the 200 meters and 400 meters, Mario Giannini in the 5,000 meters, Adrian Hipolito in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Freddy Southworth in the javelin, and Ronin Tidd in the decathlon. Staley was named both the CCAA High Point Award winner and Track Athlete of the Meet, and Hanf earned CCAA Men’s Coach of the Year honors for the eighth time.

The 2026 season also marked Chico State’s strongest NCAA Championships showing in several years. Six Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and all six earned All-America honors. Garcia was a First Team All-American in the 1,500 meters, Giannini earned First Team honors in the 10,000 meters, and the 4x400-meter relay team of Logan Cole, Harrison Hubbard, Staley and Suffredini earned Second Team honors. Staley also became Chico State’s first All-American in the men’s 400 meters.

Under Hanf’s leadership, the men’s program has produced eight CCAA team championships, numerous All-CCAA performers, USTFCCCA All-West Region selections, NCAA Championships qualifiers, All-Americans, school-record holders and national top-25 finishes. His athletes have rewritten the Chico State record book across multiple event groups, including Garcia’s 800-meter and 1,500-meter records, Staley’s 200-meter and 400-meter records, and Giannini’s top-five program marks in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters.

Before Chico State
Prior to taking over the Chico State women’s track & field program, Hanf served as head coach of the Butte College men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track & field teams.

He earned seven varsity letters in football, wrestling and track & field at Ygnacio Valley High School before attending Diablo Valley College. He later transferred to Chico State, where he competed as a nationally ranked decathlete, scoring a career-best 6,888 points in 1991. Hanf also earned All-Northern California Athletic Conference honors as a high jumper, clearing 6 feet, 9 inches in 1992, a mark that ranked among Chico State’s top 10 performances in the event for 20 years.
