Hannah Chappell joined the Chico State track & field coaching staff at the start of the 2025 season and works primarily with the Wildcats’ hammer throwers.
Chappell has helped Chico State’s hammer group make an immediate impact. In 2025, Sage Coyle set the Chico State women’s hammer throw record, while Angelina Escobar moved to No. 2 in program history and earned All-CCAA honors with a runner-up finish at the conference championships. On the men’s side, Tad Desembrana earned All-CCAA honors in 2026 with a third-place finish in the hammer at the CCAA Championships and moved into Chico State’s all-time top 10 in the event.
Chappell brings both high-level collegiate throwing experience and coaching experience to Chico State’s throws group. Before joining the Wildcats, she returned to her hometown of Oakdale and coached at her alma mater, Oakdale High School. During her time with the Mustangs, Chappell helped the program win back-to-back league titles in the shot put and coached several student-athletes who advanced to state-level meets.
As a collegiate athlete, Chappell began her career at the University of Alabama, where she competed in the discus as a freshman. She later transferred to Fresno State and became a hammer specialist for the Bulldogs. Chappell won the 2021 Mountain West Conference championship in the hammer and qualified for the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round twice during her Fresno State career.
Her collegiate-best hammer throw of 63.09 meters ranked fourth in Fresno State history at the time of her graduation.
Chappell graduated from Fresno State with a degree in education.
