MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Chico State soccer team lost to Western Oregon 1-0 on Friday. Chico State was held scoreless despite matching the Wolves with five shots on goal and taking eight shots to the Wolves' nine.
Chico State's record is now 0-1-0.
Charlotte Mailer played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves while allowing one goal. Addison Morgan tied for the team lead with two shots and put one on goal. Baylee Gregerson also finished with two shots, including one on goal.
Ayanah Soon saved Chico State attempts from Mia Cook at 1:01 and Makayla Cruz-Martinez at 6:01, and after a 'Cats corner kick, stopped Morgan's shot at 11:43. The Wolves pushed back with a corner kick at 13:36, a Grace Townsend shot saved by Charlotte Mailer at 14:12, and a Kyra DiBenedetto attempt in the 18th minute that was cleared by a team save. Ava Jara sent a Wildcats shot wide at 21:01 before Mailer saved Ashlyn Reese's shot at 24:38, and both teams missed later attempts as the first half ended 0-0.
The Wolves created the first chances of the second half, with Charlotte Mailer saving Kate Seibert's shot at 45:47 and Olivia Boger missing high before Kassie Carpenter scored off Grace Townsend's assist at 54:34 for a 1-0 lead.Â
The 'Cats pushed for an equalizer later in the half, as Gregerson forced a save from Ayanah Soon at 71:59, Morgan sent a shot high at 80:27 and, after Kyra DiBenedetto missed wide for the Wolves, Yulisa Reyes put another attempt on frame at 81:59 that Soon saved.Â
The closing minutes featured five fouls from 82:22 to 89:28, including three against the Wildcats, and the Wolves held the 1-0 score through the end of the second half.
Chico State hosts the Colorado School of Mines on Thursday at 7 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium in Chico, Calif.
