Orediggers Get Late Goals to Rally by Wildcats

CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State soccer team lost to Colorado School of Mines 4-3 on Thursday.

The Wildcats, now with a record of 1-3, took a late lead in the 81st minute when Jamie Maas scored off Aiyana Finley's assist, but the advantage did not hold.

Malia Bell scored on her only shot and was credited with a game-tying goal. Maas scored and put both of her shots on goal. Ava Jara added an unassisted goal on her lone shot. Olivia Wilson recorded an assist for the Wildcats.

Mines put Chico State under early pressure with three shots and a corner between 5:34 and 10:20, including Charlotte Mailer's save on Annelise Rojo, before another attempt went high at 12:02. Bella Campos scored at 13:03 off assists from Lindsay Jeans and Bella Torres to give the Orediggers a 1-0 lead, and the visitors continued to create chances around a stretch of fouls by both teams. The Wildcats got the equalizer at 43:20 when Bell scored off Wilson's assist, sending the match into halftime tied 1-1.

The Orediggers generated the first push of the second half with three Campos shots and two corner kicks between 50:02 and 55:37, but the Wildcats kept the match level and moved ahead when Jara scored at 58:03 for a 2-1 lead. Chico State followed with a corner at 61:51, a Maas shot saved by Brekyn Davenport-Murrish at 62:07, and another corner at 65:46 before Mines worked back with a Torres shot at 69:05 and a 72:03 corner. Campos converted a penalty kick at 79:14 to tie the match at 2-2, but Maas answered at 80:25 off Finley's assist to put the Wildcats back in front, 3-2. Mines equalized through Allyson Townsend from Campos at 85:30, Mailer saved Caelan DeBolt's penalty kick at 87:50, and DeBolt scored from Campos at 88:51 as the Orediggers finished off a 4-3 result.

Chico State gets one more workout before starting CCAA play next week. The Wildcats will host the Orediggers fellow RMAC member UCCS at University Soccer Stadium for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
