CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Dominican on Saturday at University Soccer Stadium.
Chico State (1-1-0) achieved the win with a strong defensive performance, allowing only two shots from the Penguins.
Olivia Hohnstein scored the only goal of the match in the 6th minute, securing the game-winner and adding to her season tally with a total of three shots, two of which were on target. The goal came after DUC goalkeeper Michelle Salas Viniegra left the goal box to clear a loose ball. Unfortunately for Dominican, it was a poor clearance that Hohnstein intercepted. She then skillfully dribbled to the top of the box and scored at an open spot on the right side of the goal. This marked Hohnstein's first goal since November 6, 2026.
Goalkeeper Charlotte Mailer recorded a shutout, making one save across the 90 minutes to maintain a clean sheet. This was the Wildcats' first shutout since October 31, 2025.
Chico maintained offensive pressure, recording several corner kicks and shots, including efforts from Baylee Gregerson and Makayla Quesada. The Penguins struggled to break through, with the Wildcats' goalkeeper Mailer making a crucial save in the 41st minute on a shot by Guilianna McCarty. The first half concluded with the Wildcats holding a 1-0 advantage.
The 'Cats maintained their narrow lead over the Penguins throughout the second half, holding onto a 1-0 advantage. Several fouls marked the half, with the Wildcats committing four, the first by Quesada at the 46:28 mark. Despite Dominican's attempt on goal by Takoah Castillo in the 47th minute, it went wide right. The Wildcats had multiple shot attempts, including a notable save by the Penguins' Michelle Salas Viniegra on Ava Jara's shot in the 81st minute. The match concluded without additional goals, securing Chico State's victory.
Chico State will travel to Monmouth to face Western Oregon on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
