'Cats Unable to Chop Down Lumberjacks in Arcata

ARCATA, Calif. – Chico State softball dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader against Cal Poly Humboldt, unable to hold early leads as the Lumberjacks mounted strong offensive responses in each contest.

With the losses, the Wildcats fall to 10-16 in CCAA play and slip to sixth in the conference standings, now one game behind CSU Monterey Bay (11-15) for the final postseason spot.

Game 1: Chico State 1, CPH 3

The Wildcats struggled offensively in the opener, managing just one hit in the contest.

Kennedy Gustin accounted for Chico State's lone hit and helped produce the game's first run in the third inning, giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead while the defense held Humboldt scoreless.

However, the Lumberjacks responded late with a pair of home runs to left field, scoring all three runs in the final two innings to take the game.

Amelie Valdez pitched a complete game, recording five strikeouts in the effort.

Game 2: Chico State 3, CPH 6

Chico State once again jumped out early, but a big second inning proved costly, as Humboldt scored all six of its runs in the frame to take control.

The Wildcats showed more life at the plate, recording five hits from five different players. Bella Tavares and Aiyana Curry each drove in runs, while Itzell De Los Rios added another on a wild pitch.

Tavares pitched a complete game in the circle, finishing with four strikeouts.

Chico State will look to bounce back Saturday as it closes out its final road series of the regular season. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. in Arcata.
