SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Chico State softball captured its first CCAA series win of the season Saturday, sweeping the final two games against Cal State San Bernardino to claim a 3-1 series victory. Behind another complete team effort in the San Bernardino heat, the Wildcats improve to 11-13 overall and 5-7 in conference play, moving into a tie for sixth in the standings.
Game 3: Chico State 6, CSUSB 5
Amelie Valdez delivered another complete-game performance in the circle, earning her fourth win of the season while showcasing her endurance against the Coyotes' offense. The senior recorded six strikeouts and never allowed CSUSB to take the lead, stranding runners in scoring position multiple times.
The Wildcats' offense matched Valdez's effort, scoring six runs on eight hits. Brianna Swihart and Itzell De Los Rios each hit home runs, while Marissa Anderson continued her standout weekend with two RBIs in the first inning to give Chico State an early advantage. Swihart's bomb was the first of the senior's career with the Wildcats, while De Los Rios notched her third long shot with Chico State.
De Los Rios and Swihart each recorded multi-hit games with two RBIs, while Italia Abrenica added two hits, including a triple to right field—her second of the weekend.
Game 4: Chico State 7, CSUSB 3
Chico State capped off an explosive weekend with a 7-3 win to secure the series, building on momentum from last week's split with No. 1 Cal State San Marcos.
Brianna Swihart led the way once again, recording two hits and three RBIs in the finale. She finished the weekend batting .429 (6-for-14) with five RBIs, three doubles and a home run, and now leads the team in batting average.
Kennedy Gustin and Ali Lewis also contributed RBIs, playing key roles in the Wildcats' series-clinching win.
Kylie Loertscher earned her second win of the season in relief, while Bella Tavares turned in a strong start, striking out two and issuing no walks over four innings. Tavares also contributed offensively with a single through the right side and two RBIs.
Chico State returns home March 27–28 for a CCAA series against Stanislaus State. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wildcat Softball Field.
