CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State women's soccer team's defense kept another clean sheet only this time its against the defending CCAA champions No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona as the two teams settled with a scoreless draw on Wildcat FANatics Friday evening.
It is the fifth straight match Chico State has shutout an opponent, the longest streak since the 2021 team recorded seven straight. Another impressive note is the Wildcats have yet to allow a goal in CCAA play.
Despite the draw, Chico State (4-4-2, 3-0-2 CCAA) was outshot 12-7 but kept the Broncos (5-0-5, 2-0-3 CCAA) off the board with three saves.
Charlotte Mailer played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves and recording a shutout. Olivia Hohnstein finished with two shots, including one on goal.
The Wildcats created early looks through Ava Jara in the second minute and Aiyana Finley in the ninth minute, but the Broncos generated the heavier early pressure in between and after those attempts. Carly Radke hit the left woodwork in the eighth minute and had another shot saved by Mailer in the 13th minute as the Broncos kept the match scoreless through their early push.
The Broncos later added chances from Georgia Rink and Bailey Guerrero, with the Wildcats credited with a team save on Guerrero's shot in the 35th minute before the half turned more physical with fouls on both teams.
Macyn Stewart made perhaps the save of the match in the 35th minute when Cal Poly Pomona's Bailey Guerrero chipped a shot in Wildcat territory to an unprotected goal. Stewart sprinted and cleared the ball just before the ball crossed the line, preserving the shutout.
Chico State finished the half with late pressure, getting shots from Yulisa Reyes, Hohnstein and Stewart around a 45th-minute corner kick, but neither side scored before halftime.
After the Broncos drew a yellow card and foul shortly after halftime, Jara gave the Wildcats the first recorded shot of the half in the 56th minute, sending an attempt out top right.
The Broncos generated the next sustained push with a corner kick in the 57th minute, two shots saved by Mailer from Georgia Rink and Bailey Guerrero, another corner, and a Kailey Powers shot out top left by the 69th minute.
Hohnstein put the Wildcats back on frame in the 70th minute, forcing a save from Parker LaMont, before Guerrero added another Broncos attempt in the 81st minute.
The closing stretch included four fouls and a Broncos team yellow card between the 76th and 84th minutes, and neither side scored as the match ended 0-0.
