Wildcats’ Scoreless Streak Ends in 1-0 Loss to Cal State LA

CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State soccer team lost to Cal State LA 1-0 on Sunday, marking its first CCAA loss of the season. The loss also ends the Wildcats run of 503 minutes without conceding a goal.

The Wildcats put two of their five shots on goal, all before halftime, and were held without a shot in the second half.

The Wildcats generated five shots and put two on goal, finishing ahead of the Golden Eagles in both categories despite a low-volume match overall. Chico State's attack included a 13-minute stretch with four shots and a corner kick, and Makayla Quesada supplied three shots with two on frame.

After Baylee Gregerson put the Wildcats' first shot out top in the fifth minute, the Golden Eagles went ahead in the 10th minute on Itzel Carbajal's goal on a free kick from about 35 yards out.

Chico State pushed for an equalizer through the middle of the first half, with Kendyl Sumlin saving Quesada attempts in the 19th and 24th minutes before Makayla Cruz-Martinez hit the left woodwork in the 27th minute. Quesada added another shot in the 32nd minute, but the Golden Eagles followed with a shot wide and three corner kicks over the final 13 minutes. The Wildcats kept that stretch from leading to another goal, and the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half opened with an early yellow card to Ava Jara in the 46th minute, and the Golden Eagles had the first attacking sequence with a corner in the 52nd minute and a Celine Gehrig shot in the 53rd minute.

The Wildcats earned a corner in the 63rd minute, but the Golden Eagles added corners in the 70th and 73rd minutes as the half stayed scoreless. With the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 late, the closing stretch included Wildcats fouls in the 76th and 82nd minutes, a yellow card to Analise Quintero in the 85th minute, and an Itzel Ramirez foul in the 86th minute before the Golden Eagles finished off the 1-0 result.

The Wildcats hit the road for the next three matches, starting Friday with CCAA newcomer Fresno Pacific. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
