SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Jordan Allred scored 18 points, Meadow Aragon had 16 to go along with 10 rebounds, but the Chico State women's basketball team could not answer back to Cal Poly Pomona's second-half surge as the second-seeded Broncos beat the third-seeded Wildcats 73-61 in the semifinal round of the CCAA Championship at The Sports Center Friday evening.
The Wildcats, at 23-7 overall and 15-7 in the CCAA, will now hand their 2024-25 resumé over to the NCAA Championship committee to see if it will be accepted for an at-large berth to the West Regionals next week. The NCAA Selection Show will take place Sunday at 7:30 p.m. PDT and can be viewed on NCAA.com. The West Regional is made up of three automatic bids given to the winners of the three conference tournaments and five at-large berths will be awarded based on the team's performance the entire season. Chico State entered the week ranked eighth in the West Region with notable wins include three against No. 9 Cal State LA and road wins at No. 1 Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona.
The Wildcats established an early lead with Aragon scoring the first points of the game and the team achieving a 7-point lead in the first quarter. Highlights of the first half saw Allred extending the lead with a critical 3-pointer, assisting the Wildcats to a halftime advantage of 30-26.
However, the game shifted in the second half as Cal Poly Pomona, guided by Sydney Nelson's effective scoring, went on a 14-0 run in the span of four minutes to take a 50-43 19 seconds into the fourth period. The Wildcats were unable to respond to that run as the Broncos succeeded in holding the lead comfortably the rest of the game.
Chico State ended the game shooting 35 percent (21-for-60) from the field while Cal Poly Pomona hit 44.1 percent (26-for-59).
