CARSON, Calif. – Two seasons ago, the Chico State women's basketball team beat then-No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills on a final second 3-pointer in the Torodome to hand the Toros their first loss of their West Region championship season.
Two years later, and with only Makenzi Laporte remaining on the roster when that memorable moment happened, the 2024-25 version of the Wildcats wrote a sequel to the story.
Senior Jadence Clifton hit two of the biggest 3-pointers in her collegiate career thus far, the first at the 1:18 mark and the other with 47.3 seconds left, to put the Wildcats ahead and Jordan Allred made one free throw with 2.8 seconds left to secure a 75-71 upset win over now-No. 2 Dominguez Hills on its home floor to hand the Toros their first loss of the season in 28 games played.
The win caps off a crucial 2-0 road trip in Los Angeles County for Chico State as the NCAA Championship committee will now have to evaluate the Wildcats' performance against two teams they placed 'under consideration' in the first regional poll announcement back on Wednesday.
Chico State also earned its 20
th win for the second consecutive season, improving to 20-6 with two games left to play in the regular season. The Wildcats, with a 15-5 conference record, still sits alone at third place as they continue trailing second-place Cal Poly Pomona and leading fourth-place Cal State San Bernardino, both by two games. The Broncos and Coyotes will both finish the regular season on the road while Chico State closes in Acker Gym.
The Wildcats' home stand begins with Sonoma State on Champions in Unity Night on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (27-1, 19-1 CCAA), which captured at least a share of the CCAA championship on Thursday, missed out on earning it outright today and will have to earn it on the road in the Bay Area.
It was the fourth quarter that had the most intensity and, of course, the most excitement in the game. With the Toros leading 65-57 with six minutes left in the game, the Wildcats' rally began with Meadow Aragon making a layup and La Palma native Kaila Woo, playing in front of her family and friends, hit her only 3-pointer on the day to shrink the deficit down to three with five minutes left. Thanks to Allred's two 3-pointers, the Wildcats would be down 70-68 with 1:27 left in the game.
After Clifton's second clutch basket put the Wildcats ahead 74-71, the remaining 47 seconds battled through a stampede against a talented Toros team on the home team's side of the court. Dominguez Hills made consecutive 3-point shots to tie the game as the clock was ticking away and Chico State was unable to get the rebound. The final attempt, made by CCAA Player of the Year frontrunner Nala Williams, was rebounded by Allred with 7.5 seconds left.
While Dominguez Hills tried to force a turnover on the inbound, Laporte, from the baseline, found an open Allred by the Wildcats' bench to maintain possession and the Toros had to foul the senior, which setup the free throw that eventually put the game out of reach.
Allred finished the day with 21 points while Clifton had 16. Aragon also had a productive day, recording a dozen points while grabbing 10 of the Wildcats' 40 rebounds.
Chico State ended its day shooting 44.4 percent (28-for-63) from the field while making 11 baskets from 3-point range.
Williams carried Dominguez Hills on her back the entire game, scoring 29 points in 32 minutes she's played. The Toros took a hit in the end when Asia Jordan, their top rebounder, had fouled out of the game with 1:27 left.
The Toros ended up shooting 39.5 percent (30-for-76) from the field.
