AZUSA – With the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship season on the horizon, several members of the Chico State men's and women's teams made the trip back to Azusa Pacific to improve their resumés at the Fransen Last Chance on Friday and Saturday.
Â
Nine Wildcats, four from the women's side and five from the men, did just that.
Â
Della Molina not only won the women's 5,000-meter in 16:24.48 but it improved her provisional mark. She entered the meet with the 26
th fastest time in NCAA Division II and will presumably move inside the top 25.
Â
Her twin sister, Iresh, also came up victorious in the women's 10,000-meter, running in 34:19.11 to set her first provisional mark in the event and is expected to be in the top 10.
Â
Another event winner was Josie Peterson, who threw for 44.45 meters in the women's javelin to enhance her provisional stamp by 0.16 meters. She will likely move into the top 20 when the rest of the results are turned in.
Â
Although she set an NCAA mark in the women's 100-meter hurdles earlier in the year, Alexis Hinojosa ran a provisional time of 14.11 in the final round. She missed her best mark set at the CCAA Championships by 0.01 meters.
Â
On the men's side, distance runners Brayden McLaughlin and Hunter Dougherty each improved their NCAA provisional marks in their respective events while Vincent Rinaldi, Damian Garcia and Mario Giannini both joined the ranks.
Â
Dougherty, running in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossed the finish line in 8:57.06 to shatter his previous NCAA provisional time which was 9:05.86 set at the CCAA Championships. His new time will move him inside the top 25.
Â
McLaughlin finished second in the 10,000-meter race in 29:16.11, improving his mark 4.91 seconds. He is expected to move inside the nation's top 20. Giannini also earned a qualifying time in the event, running in 29:53.50.
Â
Rinaldi dashed his way into the championship qualifying mark in the 200-meter. He ran a 21.09 to earn his first provisional time of the season. Garcia ran the mile event and turned in a 4:03.45.
Â
With the season complete, the Wildcats will be tuning in on NCAA.com on Tuesday to see who will be invited to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 23-25 at Emporia State in Kansas.
