TURLOCK – Coming off a 3-hit, 4-RBI night in Friday's CCAA series opener at Stanislaus State, Alexander Johnson walked back into Warrior Baseball Field and slugged in four more RBIs on four hits, one of which was a home run, as Chico State swept Saturday's doubleheader with the Warriors, 11-2 in game one and 8-2 in game two.
The Wildcats (11-5, 6-5 CCAA) also take the conference series and will attempt the sweep Sunday at noon. Don't forget to move your clocks an hour forward tonight as we move into Daylight Saving Time.
Chico State's bats have been doing serious damage to Stan State's (7-10-1, 3-6 CCAA) pitching. The Wildcats not only have been outscoring the Warriors, 45-8 in the series but have batted in 39 of them. Saturday's doubleheader had also seen the 'Cats outslug the Warriors .500 to .338.
Johnson has had an incredible series thus far, going 7-for-12 at the plate with eight RBIs. He went 4-for-8 in Saturday's doubleheader that included a two-run double in the sixth inning of game one in which the Wildcats plated six unearned runs to take a 6-2 lead. He had trouble trying to close out the eighth with the bases loaded and two out but Tych Ochs was successful in getting a groundout to end the inning. Ryan Silvers closed out the ninth striking out two and giving up just a two-out single.
Marco Ibarra, coming off a difficult outing against San Francisco State last weekend in his first start as a Wildcat, got a second chance against the Warriors and had a much better performance that earned him his third win of the season. The senior right-hander went five innings striking out two while giving up two runs to the leadoff hitters in the second and third innings. Ochs came back to the mound for game two and finished the remaining two innings striking out three and allowing one hit.
