HAYWARD & STANFORD – After enjoying spring break last week, the Chico State men's track & field team returned to action and split the squad up and compete on each end of the San Francisco Bay Area Friday and Saturday. A majority of the group was on the Peninsula side participating in the Stanford Invitational while the others were on the other side of the Dumbarton Bridge in Hayward for the Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
 
Both meets featured competitors from all levels in the NCAA and two-year institutions.
 
Several Wildcats got top 10 finishes in crowded events. Starting with the Stanford Invitational, Chance Hefter came up short from setting an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the shot put but finished third out of 26 participants. The 1600-meter relay team took third out of 13 groups. Ty Thomson took ninth in the 400-meter dash out of 45 runners.
 
Over at the Fanelli Track Classic, Damian Garcia finished fifth out of 223. The distance medley relay featuring Brayden McLaughlin, Matthew Gordon, Garcia and Mario Giannini took second place out of 24 groups.
 
Daniel Hernandez finished eighth in the 10,000-meter run while Hunter Dougherty also took eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
 
Chico State will be making two meet appearances this coming week. It begins Thursday and Friday with a return to Turlock for the Stan State Multis while the rest of the team will head to Berkeley for the University of California's Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Saturday.
