TURLOCK – After poor weather forced Saturday's games to be called off, Chico State resumed the Tournament of Champions in their finale against Central Washington. Two late runs in the seventh inning from the GNAC opponent stole the win from Chico State, leaving them at 1-2 on the weekend.
An early homerun from CWU's Alyssa Benthagen gave them a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But a late-game double from Brooke Jordan sealed the win for Central Washington, driving in two runs to steal a one-run advantage from Chico State.
Elisa Haas had a standout performance against CWU on Sunday, earning all four RBIs for the team in the non-conference battle. After a fielding error from the pitcher, Haas reached base and drove home Hannah Levy to cut Central Washington's lead to 1 in the third.
Haas eventually smashed a three-run home run over the center field fence in the 5th inning to give her team the 4-2 lead. Sunday's blast over the fence was her first career home run with the program and a team high on the season in batted-in runs.
Hannah Levy had three hits against the Wildcats from CWU, a season-high for the sophomore left fielder. Ali Lewis recorded two hits, with two other 'Cats notching hits on Sunday.
In Amalie Valdez's thirteenth start in the circle for Chico State, she retired eight Central Washington batters.
The Chico State Wildcats jump back into CCAA conference play this upcoming weekend with an away series at Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside. With a record of 5-11 in the conference, the Wildcats can jump over CSUMB and Stanislaus State with a successful weekend on the road.
