CHICO, Calif. - An explosive offense backed by Jojo Murphy and Isaiah Kerr, see quick work of the visiting San Francisco State Gators on Saturday night. The Wildcats claimed their third straight CCAA conference win, extending their record to 3-0 (6-2 overall) and sitting on top of the conference.
The offense was spurred behind 21 points from Murphy, recording his 5th 20-point game of the season as the junior continues to lead the conference in scoring, averaging 19.4 points.
A strength for the Wildcats that seems engraved into the culture of Chico State basketball is the team's ability to make stops on defense and transition seamlessly. The 'Cats' ability to push the ball up the court after nabbing a board or stripping the ball continues to make teams hesitant to play too freely.
Chico State found success offensively early into the game, shooting 53 percent from the field in the first half, holding the visitors to only nine baskets in the same half. The Gators started to piece their offense together after the halftime break, but poor shooting from three-point land spelled disaster for the Bay Area program as they collectively shot 11 percent from long range.
Freshman Cortavious Taylor is starting to find his flow offensively, scoring a team third-best 12 points on the night. A tough scoring night for Miles Daniels was offset by impressive playmaking as the junior nabs seven assists, bringing his season total to forty-one.
Defensively, the Wildcats were able to hold the Gators to a meager 26 points in the first half, but as the clock expired, SFS outperformed 'he 'Cats in the scoring in the closing half 36-35.
In their final conference matchup before the winter break, the Chico Stmen'sen's basketball team hosts the Lumberjacks in their second three-week meeting on December 14th. Tip-off against 'he 'Jacks is at 3 p.m., and they will be guaranteed an exciting rematch with their Northern California neighbors.
