2024 CCAA Men's & Women's Cross Country Champions

‘Cats Ready for ‘Home Course’ Advantage at NCAA Championships

11/20/2024 1:57:00 PM

CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State women's and men's cross country teams have been frequent visitors of the NCAA Championships for around a quarter of a century.

But the 2024 edition of the national championship will become more of a 'home course' feeling for the Wildcats as the meet will be held at the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, just less than 100 miles from campus.

The men will begin with the 10K run at 10 a.m. followed by the women's 6K at 11:15 a.m. Admission to the course is free but there is a $20 parking charge per vehicle. Cash and cards are accepted on site.

Fans unable to attend the meet can watch on NCAA.com or follow the live results page by clicking here.

Both Wildcat teams arrive at the state's capital already with two championship trophies after having swept both the CCAA and NCAA West Regional titles. For the men's team, they continue to set unprecedented streaks of 22 straight conference and eight straight regional titles. The women's team has new momentum going after capturing a second straight conference championship and reclaiming the regional crown for the first time since 2019.

The men's team had remained steady inside the United State Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) top-10 all season long. They currently check in at No. 6. While CCAA and West Region Coach of the Year Gary Towne's 'A' group won all five meets they ran. In addition to winning both the regional and conference meets, the group also took an impressive win at the 35-team field Charger Invitational on October 12. Towne's 'B' group also had an impressive second-place finish at the San Francisco State Invitational the day before.

The Wildcat men are currently led by Mario Giannini, who took the medalist honor at both the conference and regional championships. Chico State also saw six runners, including Giannini, make both the All-West Region and All-CCAA teams.

The Chico State women's team has been seeing a resurgence this season with the leadership of Della and Iresh Molina. The twin sisters have placed in the top 10 in all six of the meets they ran, including taking first, literally hand-in-hand, in the season-opening Kim Duyst Invitational, which landed them the first CCAA Co-Runners of the Week. In addition to winning the season-opener, Della also clinched the CCAA Championship medalist honor with her sister finishing right behind her by 0.5 seconds. Della was also named CCAA Runner of the Year for her success at the conference race.

Sophie Pelletier and Jasmine Fletcher joined the Molinas on the All-CCAA team.

The Wildcat women enter the NCAA Championships ranked 13th in the nation according to the USTFCCA. The Wildcats have ranked in the top 15 all season long, including the best ranking at 11 in the first two polls.
