No. 5 Broncos Stampede Wildcats in Three Sets

CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State volleyball team found some momentum in the third set, but fifth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona rallied and proved to be too much as the Broncos swept the Wildcats (15-25, 6-25, 20-25) in their only meeting in 2024 at Acker Gym Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats fall to 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the CCAA while the Broncos remain the lone undefeated team in conference play at 12-0 while moving up to 18-1 overall.

After Cal Poly Pomona cruised in the first two sets, Chico State started the third with hope. Both teams traded off a point to start the game but a five-point run moved the Wildcats ahead for the first time in the match. Chico State had a 16-8 lead until Cal Poly Pomona won 11 of the next 12 serves to take the lead. The Wildcats couldn't shift the tide back to their favor after that.

Kassandra Nall and Cashe Olswang each had five kills while Gwyneth Wentzel had four. Caitlyn Eichhorst led the effort on the back row with eight digs followed by Nall with seven. Eichhorst also took the lead in the sets department, collecting 10 of the 'Cats 20 assists made.

The Broncos was led by Charlotte Koerber and Samantha Campion, who each combined for 21 kills. Campion also had a double-double, making 14 digs on the day. Cal Poly Pomona also gathered many points from the serve, earning 11 aces.

Chico State now begins its longest road trip of the season as far as distance goes. The Wildcats will start out at San Francisco State Thursday followed by Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. Both are 5 p.m. start times. Chico State's road trip also includes visits to Sonoma State and Cal Poly Humboldt the following week.
