T(Winning)! Molina Sisters Lead ‘Cats to Another CCAA Title

10/25/2024 1:50:00 PM

FRESNO, Calif. – A new streak has begun for the Chico State women's cross country team.

After reclaiming the CCAA Championship from Stanislaus State last season, the Wildcats bested the Warriors again to clinch their second straight conference title at Woodward Park on Friday. The Wildcats collected 43 points while the Warriors finished with 60 points.

The dynamic twin duo of Della and Iresh Molina, who have raced at the very same park as runners for Chico High in 2019, took the top two finish, respectively at 21:11.9 and 21:13.7. Della becomes the first top finisher for Chico State since Destiny Everett won it in 2019.

It is also the second time this season the twins crossed the finish line at one and two, the last being at the season-opening Kim Duyst Twilight when they won the meet hand-in-hand.

The twins had a battle with Sonoma State's Constance O'Neal. The trio were neck-and-neck at the first checkpoint. Della maintained her lead heading into the 2.5-mile mark, but Iresh fell three spots behind the two and Stan State's Annie Wild. Iresh would eventually leap both Wild and O'Neal and beat the two by less than seven seconds.

Also contributing to the team scoring were Sophie Pelletier, who ran a 22:04.7 to take ninth overall, Jasmin Fletcher placed 13th overall followed by Marbella Flores at 18th, Jaclyn Denham at 20th place and Sienna Bianchi at 22nd.

Kaya Scuba was another top 30 finisher, placing 28th at 22:55.6. Hannah Wirth took 34th overall and Zoe Aitken placed 51st to round out the Wildcats.

With the conference trophy captured, the Wildcats will now seek the NCAA West Regional title. It will be held November 9 at Montana State Billings' Amend Park.
