Wildcats Cut Down Lumberjacks 2-1 in Arcata

ARCATA, California. - The Chico State men's soccer team traveled to Arcata for their Sunday CCAA matchup against the Lumberjacks.

After their dropped match against Sonoma State on Friday, the Wildcats were looking to bounce back with a solid win to get back on track. The Wildcats currently sit in the top six of the conference standings but still have work to do if they want to qualify for the CCAA Championships in November.

Sunday's match began in favor of the Wildcats with a 10th-minute goal from Carson Zarate, who tapped home a corner from Bryan Manriquez to set the momentum in favor of the 'Cats.

Offensively, the game had tipped in favor of the Wildcats much of the game; they had outshot the 'Jacks 8-2 shots on goal after the final whistle.

Miles Rice added to the score with a goal in the 55th minute to add to his team-leading total of eight on the season. The senior is third in the CCAA in goals scored, sitting behind Brian Castillo (CSUSB), who leads with 10, and Mikey McKibbin (CSUDH) with nine goals.

The Lumberjacks responded with a goal of their own in the 58th minute to cut the deficit to a single goal. However, a solid defensive effort from the Wildcats saw the game out, with the three points coming home with them.

Chico State improved to 9-2-2 (3-1-2 CCAA) with the win in Arcata and jumped into third place on the conference standings. A tie between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills gave the 'Cats a boost just a single point behind the top of the standings.

The Wildcats have two more home matchups before they conclude the season with three straight road games. Starting the weekend, Chico State will host Cal Poly Pomona in a crucial face-off with the Broncos; kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium.
