Momentums Hurt ‘Cats in Four-Set Loss to CSUSM

SAN MARCOS – Chico State took the first match in good fashion, but Cal State San Marcos got into multiple scoring rhythms to take the CCAA contest in four sets (25-12, 19-25, 15-25, 20-25) Friday evening.
 
The 'Cats dip their overall record to 4-5 and their CCAA record to 1-4. The Cougars are now 5-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
 
While Chico State hit 28 percent on the attack tonight, they were quite impressive in the first set, recording 18 kills in 29 attempts while committing no errors.
 
Zoe DiNardo racked up 15 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, Brooklynn Anderson had 10 kills, Lexi Carpenter racked up 16 digs and Brooke Ono dished out 42 assists.
 
The Wildcats had two runs that gave them the opening set. Tied at three, the Wildcats went on to win six of the next seven serves and then later one they went on a 13-3 run to an 18-8 lead.
 
San Marcos was up by three in the second game and then the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to take a 22-14 lead. In the third round, the Cougars scored six straight to build a 13-5 lead and in the fourth game San Marcos jumped ahead 8-2 to take control. With their backs against the wall, Chico State made an effort to rally by scoring three straight points until San Marcos got the match point.
 
The Wildcats head north to play 14th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Saturday at 1 p.m. The first-place Broncos swept Stanislaus State for their ninth straight win.
