POMONA – The Chico State volleyball team stood toe-to-toe with the leaders of the CCAA in Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. Although an early lead to start the match looked promising for the Wildcats, the No. 14 Broncos ended up stampeding them in three sets (16-25, 18-25, 14-25).
The Wildcats drop to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA while the Broncos, winners of 10 straight, bump their overall record up to 13-1 and remain a perfect 6-0 in conference.
Chico State opened the match with a 7-3 lead, highlighted by a pair of kills from Zoe DiNardo and Brooklynn Anderson along with aces from Brooke Ono and Jessie Camarillo. The Broncos responded after by rallying to take a 21-13 lead en route to the set win. The second set saw Chico State trail by as many as three. It got to within 18-17 until Cal Poly Pomona won 7-of-8 rallies to take the second set. The Broncos opened the third game with a 5-1 lead and never looked back.
The Wildcats hit .151 on the afternoon. DiNardo was only to collect seven kills, Taylor Whyte had six and Gwyneth Wentzel had four. Ono dished out 21 assists and defensively DiNardo led the effort with nine digs and a block.
Cal Poly Pomona finished the match hitting 40.6 percent on the attack.
Chico State continues its five-match road swing with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside. The two meet Friday at 5 p.m.
